The home of gothic culture, Whitby has a strong and interesting maritime history along with strong links to art and culture. Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, found his inspiration in Whitby and the Whitby Goth Weekend remains one of the town’s most popular events. Winding cobbled streets, lined with fisherman’s cottages, lead down to a busy and bustling harbour, all overlooked by the ruins of Whitby Abbey. On a holiday or short break in Whitby expect a perfect fusion of history, literary inspiration and beautiful beach and harbour views.

Your guide to Whitby

Whitby at a glance:
  • One of Britain’s most loved seaside towns.
  • Home of the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, after he trained here as an apprentice.
  • Renowned as having some of the country’s best fish and chips.
  • Source of inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, with related attractions.
  • Great beaches and harbour walks.

Whitby is a short break and holiday destination with two distinct personalities, both of which you’ll want to experience during your stay in a Whitby hotel. On one hand, the town is a charming seaside holiday destination complete with quaint cottages, winding streets, a rich maritime history and a wonderfully picturesque harbour. On the other it’s a and cultural gem – the inspiration behind one of the most popular and enduring characters in literary history and one of the UK’s most popular destinations for gothic and alternative experiences.

Whitby’s seaside area is a delight for walking, with a bustling harbour and spectacular stretches of coastline. The harbour is lined with welcoming seafood restaurants serving the fresh catch of the day, and with lovely little tea rooms that offer flavourful light meals and snacks. Whitby’s traditional chip shops also sell some of the UK’s best fish and chips, drawing crowds from far and wide. Whitby is one of the true treasures of the Yorkshire coastline, and whilst it doesn’t offer the lively entertainment of other resorts it instead provides an amiable escape with rustic pubs and other serene attractions, such as the popular North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which lets you savour the beauty of the surrounding countryside as you experience an authentic, traditional steam train journey.

The historic side of Whitby is truly fascinating. Whitby served both as the inspiration and the setting for the Bram Stoker novel Dracula, which is a tale that has become known across the world. Visitors to the town can learn more, particularly by exploring the impressive ruins of Whitby Abbey. For true historians, no holiday or short break in Whitby would be complete without a tour of the Captain Cook Museum which tells of the life of the famed explorer James Cook, who sailed primarily around the Pacific making valuable discoveries that have influenced explorers and scientists ever since.

Twice a year, Whitby undergoes a complete transformation as it hosts the Whitby Gothic Weekend - a festival dedicated to gothic culture and music, which attracts tourists from all over the world. It takes place during April and either October or November and features a range of activities and events. If you aren’t a fan of the music then you needn’t be put off, as there is a truly friendly atmosphere and it is simply an intriguing time to see the town in a new light.

During your stay, your Whitby hotel is the ideal base for exploring further afield into the North York Moors, or simply remaining local and soaking in the pleasant sea air and the general aura of the town.
