Your guide to Eastbourne

Eastbourne at a glance:
  • A traditional beach holiday destination, complete with a pier and bandstand.
  • On the edge of the South Downs National Park.
  • A variety of local theatres, sure to keep your evenings busy.
  • Home to the Redoubt Fortress – one of the best military museums in the UK.
  • Visit Beachy Head, the UK’s highest chalk cliff.

Located on the edge of the South Downs National Park, Eastbourne is a traditional seaside destination for holidays and short breaks on the Sussex coast. Book your room at an Eastbourne hotel and you can expect to spend your stay enjoying the surrounding natural beauty spots, local cultural venues and traditional sea front attractions which include the bandstand, the pier and a number of beautiful coastal parks.

One of Eastbourne’s most beautiful landmarks is the famous Beachy Head, which is the UK’s highest chalk cliff. Enjoy walks along the coast, where you can take in the view from the top of the cliff whilst standing 531 feet above sea level. Just off the coast, located underneath the cliff, is a distinctive red and white lighthouse. Plan a walk along the coast, taking in the sight of Beachy Head amongst other beautiful views.

Eastbourne’s parks include Princes Park, which really comes alive through the warm summer months. Set around a large artificial lake, the park features two adventure playgrounds and a scented rose garden, as well as a seasonal putting course and an on-site café. Shinewater Park is another option, complete with its BMX and skate park sure to appeal to teenagers, and its playground for younger children.

In any season, a visit to Birling Gap is well worth your time. It’s a popular beach with plenty of places to relax or to explore. Kids will have the opportunity to poke around in rock pools and to collect ‘treasures’ on the beach, even through the autumn and winter months. Fly a kite on a breezy day, or take advantage of the sunshine for a spot of swimming in the calm, safe waters that lap against the shore.

Eastbourne’s more formal tourist attractions include one of the UK’s best military museums – the famous Redoubt Fortress – and the Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway which rushes through a beautiful country park complete with a lake, a playground and an on-site café, plus picnic spots and a railway-themed gift shop. Also popular is the ‘How We Lived Then’ museum, which takes you on a nostalgic trip through time with carefully replicated shops that are stocked with products dating back to pre-war times. With kids absolutely fascinated by the items on display and with adults casting their minds back to how they felt in their own childhood, a visit to the museum is sure to be a memorable day out for every member of your travel party.

Finally, don’t forget to pay a visit to the Fort Fun family theme park, which is by far the most popular of all Eastbourne attractions for families that are travelling with children. With traditional fairground rides, a soft play centre and an exciting splash park, kids can burn off all of their excess energy before you return to your Eastbourne hotel.
