Hotel information

Scotland’s dramatic Northern Highlands are spectacular and wild with mountainous countryside, sparkling streams, waterfalls and golden shores. Set in its own grounds with lovely views over the colourful village square, this chateau style hotel’s traditional features have been carefully retained to strike just the right Highland note. A warm welcome feeling comes as much from the friendly staff as from the fine wood panelled public rooms which have been carefully preserved.

Strathpeffer itself is just steps away from the hotel and is renowned as an attractive Highland spa resort with fabulous Victorian architecture. Be sure to enjoy the scenic views of the village below from the open veranda. The massive peak of Ben Wyvis is the backdrop to this charming village. Local Insight

Located about 20 miles northwest of Inverness, you will come to the lovely village of Strathpeffer. It is a sheltered glen that was once a popular spa town in Victorian times due to the sulphur springs that were found here in the 18th century. This village was the scene of fierce fighting between the MacKenzies and the MacDonalds in the 15th century and later between the MacKenzies and the Munros. The MacKenzies won the battles in both cases.

  • Highlands Museum of Childhood
Growing up in the Highlands of Scotland would be a very different proposition to growing up in a major city, especially in times gone by, before telephones and computers made the world smaller. This museum of childhood examines the way that children have lived in this area and the way that childhood has changed more generally as the world has developed and attitudes with it.

  • Dingwall Museum
Dingwall Museum is a small but beautifully developed museum that is dedicated to the study and history of the town and the people that have lived in it. There are some archaeological pieces on display that show the fact that there has been a presence of human kind in the area for many thousands of years. In the museum you will also find a fascinating collection of antiques, documents and pictures.

  • Fort George
Following the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite army at Culloden, the Hanoverian King George II put up the ultimate defence against any further unrest - Fort George. Built on a barren spit of land jutting in the Moray Firth at Ardersier, north east of Inverness, Fort George is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, if not in Europe. Its elaborate 18th-century bastioned defences and original garrison buildings survive intact. Almost a mile around, Fort George encloses an area of 42 acres. Despite taking 21 years to complete and costing nearly £1 billion at today's prices, Fort George never saw a shot fired in anger.

  • Culloden
Culloden Moor, scene of the last battle fought on mainland Britain, is one of the most iconic and emotive sites in Scotland. The battle that took place here on 16th April 1746 effectively ended Jacobite hopes of restoring the exiled Stuart dynasty to the throne of Britain. The army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart was crushed by Government forces led by the Duke of Cumberland. In less than an hour - the time it takes to walk round the battlefield - it was over. The brutal measures imposed after the battle signalled the end of the distinctive way of life and culture of the Highland people of Scotland.
