The Waverley Castle Hotel is situated one mile outside the town of Melrose, in five acres of rolling parkland at the heart of the Scottish Borders. Nestling between the River Tweed and the Eildon Hills, it is an impressive building boasting stunning views.

Guests can happily relax in the restaurant and enjoy outstanding views out over the Eildon Hills. After dinner you can continue your evening in the welcoming bar and ballroom where you can dance the night away to our excellent evening entertainment. The area is perfect for those who like to get out and explore with great walks to enjoy along the River Tweed.

How to get there


By Car:

From Galashiels – Take the A6091 signposted for Melrose. Head straight across the next 3 roundabouts. The hotel is on the left hand side, about 400 yards after the last roundabout. From Newcastle-Upon-Tyne direction – Take the A68 to Jedburgh. Continue on A68, bypassing St Boswells, turn left onto the A6091, signposted Melrose. Continue to the next roundabout and take the 3rd exit for Melrose. The hotel is on the left hand side about 300 yards away. From Carlisle direction – Take the A7 to Hawick and then Selkirk. Continue on A7 until reaching the A6091. Turn right, following the signs for Melrose. Head straight across the 2 roundabouts. The hotel is on the left hand side, about 400 yards from the last roundabout. (AA Roadwatch 09003 401100).

By Train:

The nearest railway station is Waverley Station, Edinburgh. (Rail enquiries to 08457 484950).

By National Express:

Services to Galashiels (National Express enquiries to 08705 808080. Scottish Citylink enquiries to 08705 505050).

By Bus:

First Bus number 62 or X95 from the train station to Galashiels. There are several services from Galashiels bus station to Melrose.

By Taxi:

  • Melrose Abbey
    Melrose Abbey is a magnificent ruin on a grand scale with lavishly decorated masonry. The Abbey is thought to be the burial place of Robert the Bruce’s heart, marked with a commemorative carved stone plaque within the grounds. Visitors can also visit a small museum housing a display of artefacts found within the abbey.

  • Abbotsford House
    stunningly located on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish   Borders.  Abbotsford sits at the heart of the landscape that inspired   the poetry and novels of its creator, Sir Walter Scott. Unlike the homes   of other great writers, this is a house that the writer himself   designed and as such uniquely embodies a physical representation of the   Romantic Movement that he helped to create. When you touch the bricks   and mortar of Abbotsford, you are touching the soul of Scott. The house contains an impressive collection of historic relics, weapons and armour, including Rob Roy’s gun, dirk and sword, and an   extensive library containing over 9,000 rare volumes. It sits amid formal gardens and a wider landscape that Scott designed and planted.

  • Priorwood Gardens
    Priorwood is a small walled garden of under two acres of specific horticultural interest, consisting of the production of dried flowers and the cultivation of a collection of apple varieties. The garden is currently at the beginning of a period of revitalisation, during which the herbaceous borders are to be redesigned and rebuilt and new garden features are to be included, such as a lengthy pergola and a shady woodland area displaying rare plants. General maintenance procedures are being revised, and this period is sure to be a fascinating one for gardeners to watch. It is usually possible during the summer and early autumn for the process of drying flowers to be seen, and at other times of the year there will be arrangements being made within the shop.

  • Dryburgh Abbey
    The graceful ruins of Dryburgh Abbey nestle in wooded seclusion beside the River Tweed. On entering, the visitor immediately understands why the contemplative life of a medieval monk was attractive. The abbey was established in 1150 by white-clad Premonstratensian canons. They were invited to this idyllic spot from Alnwick Priory, Northumberland, by Hugh de Moreville. The Constable of Scotland and Lord of Lauderdale, he was himself an incomer from England.
