Local Insight
Melrose Abbey Melrose Abbey is a magnificent ruin on a grand scale with lavishly decorated masonry. The Abbey is thought to be the burial place of Robert the Bruce’s heart, marked with a commemorative carved stone plaque within the grounds. Visitors can also visit a small museum housing a display of artefacts found within the abbey. Visit their website
Abbotsford House stunningly located on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders. Abbotsford sits at the heart of the landscape that inspired the poetry and novels of its creator, Sir Walter Scott. Unlike the homes of other great writers, this is a house that the writer himself designed and as such uniquely embodies a physical representation of the Romantic Movement that he helped to create. When you touch the bricks and mortar of Abbotsford, you are touching the soul of Scott. The house contains an impressive collection of historic relics, weapons and armour, including Rob Roy’s gun, dirk and sword, and an extensive library containing over 9,000 rare volumes. It sits amid formal gardens and a wider landscape that Scott designed and planted. Visit their website
Priorwood Gardens Priorwood is a small walled garden of under two acres of specific horticultural interest, consisting of the production of dried flowers and the cultivation of a collection of apple varieties. The garden is currently at the beginning of a period of revitalisation, during which the herbaceous borders are to be redesigned and rebuilt and new garden features are to be included, such as a lengthy pergola and a shady woodland area displaying rare plants. General maintenance procedures are being revised, and this period is sure to be a fascinating one for gardeners to watch. It is usually possible during the summer and early autumn for the process of drying flowers to be seen, and at other times of the year there will be arrangements being made within the shop. Dryburgh Abbey The graceful ruins of Dryburgh Abbey nestle in wooded seclusion beside the River Tweed. On entering, the visitor immediately understands why the contemplative life of a medieval monk was attractive. The abbey was established in 1150 by white-clad Premonstratensian canons. They were invited to this idyllic spot from Alnwick Priory, Northumberland, by Hugh de Moreville. The Constable of Scotland and Lord of Lauderdale, he was himself an incomer from England. Waverley Castle
My partner and I visited this hotel 17/09/2010. We had booked a superior room, which lived up to everything it said on the website, a little smaller than expected but very comfortable. The food was excellent, the service okay (we had to ask several times for tea/toast etc). Tania in the dining room and Simon in the bar were brilliant. The entertainment was good and the overall trip was excellent value for money. Yes, the hotel is looking tired in some areas but as for value for money 10/10.

The Waverley Castle
My husband and I stayed for three nights here. It has a lovely reception and easy check-in. Room immaculate and overlooking gardens. Staff and food were first class, nothing too much trouble. Adam Carter, the Elvis impersonator, was the best we have seen for costume changes and James, who was entertaining before him, worked very hard for the audience. An excellent night! Drinks are a little on the expensive side but having got a good deal on the accommodation, we didn’t mind. We will definitely return. Also, had a winner at Kelso races! 10/10.

Review of the Waverley Castle
My husband and I stayed here from 14th to 18th February. Service was excellent, particularly in the dining room where staff were very hard working. Trips excellent. Only downside was a tired looking room and some areas also looking in need of a decor overhaul. Food very good. Entertainment not to our taste, but all in all, a good break.

Waverley Castle
We stayed at Waverley Castle last year and enjoyed our stay. We have just returned from a 3 night stay and was not disappointed. Food really good, waitress and bar staff excellent. We enjoyed the Saturday night entertainment, it was a quiz and 60's night - very entertaining. The entrance and bar area have been refurbished since our last stay and it looks fabulous. See you again next year!

Waverley Castle
Stayed for three nights with my partner and our two friends. The rooms are very tired looking and would benefit from some TLC but are very clean. All through the hotel you could not fault the cleanliness. The staff although mostly foreign were very friendly and attentive. Nothing being too much trouble. It did seem a pity that there were no Scottish staff. The entertainment was very good. James really did brighten up the weekend and he was very talented. The food was surprisingly very good.

We were shocked at our bedroom . It was very poor with rotten windows and damp on the ceiling-the carpet had not been hovered and the toilet was black under the rim. We were given another room which was dated but it was clean. The hotel is being upgraded and the parts which had been done were nice. This was our only complaint during our stay. The staff in the dining room and bar were excellent-efficient and friendly and the entertainment especially James was brilliant. Very funny. Food was good.

Thanks for help
I would like to say a big thank you to the staff that helped my wife when she was taken ill on the 2nd day of her visit to your hotel. After a night spent in Hospital, she went on to enjoy the remainder of the week at your Hotel. Many thanks to you all. Yours truly, Tom Hawley.

The Brillian James
The Brilliant James Forget the shabby rundown hotel and the mediocre food. This hotel is well worth a visit just for the entertainment. Can't think what the brilliant James Mullaney is doing in this backwater as he deserves his own national TV programme, but make the most of getting up close and personal before he's "discovered". He sings (brilliant voice) he dances, he hosts, but what I'll remember most is the way he responds to his audience. I've never heard quicker or wittier ripostes. Great.
