The county of Yorkshire reaches into no less than three National Parks: the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and the Peak District. It’s also home to the magnificent moorland of Bronte Country as well as the rural wilderness of Howardian Hills and the Yorkshire Wolds. Both of our hotels in this area are a stone’s throw from the North York Moors where there are countless walks, for all abilities. What better than whiling away an afternoon travelling up hill and down dale through wild moorland, lush valleys, wildflower meadows and along rugged cliffs?
A paradise for walking fans then. But the coast is fantastic too. In fact, many believe it to be among the finest in Britain. Try heading for the seaside town of Filey. It’s just south of our Bay Norbreck Hotel in Scarborough and features a five mile stretch of golden sands as well as a classic seaside culture that recalls the era of the Victorian love affair with the English coast. Fantastic.
Pannett Park, near our Bay Royal Whitby Hotel, offers visitors the chance to unwind in beautifully kept gardens, lawns and wooded areas. The park is also home to Pannett Art Gallery and Whitby Museum, where you’ll find a stunning variety of interesting artefacts. Or try Peasholm Park in Scarborough, a gorgeous oriental-themed park with mini waterfalls, trickling streams and landscaped gardens. There’s also a boating lake, putting green and café. It makes for a lovely afternoon.
Sewerby Hall and Gardens are well worth a visit too. Set in a dramatic cliff-top location, the fifty acre parkland overlooking Bridlington Bay is regarded as having the finest gardens in the region. They’re well worth making the short journey for. And Sewerby Hall’s tea rooms are the perfect place to recharge after taking in the botanical beauty.
But no trip to the east coast of Yorkshire is complete without a visit to Whitby Abbey. Set high on the cliff above Whitby, this ruined abbey was founded in 657. It has a fascinating heritage and was a big inspiration to Bram Stoker, author of Dracula. The abbey’s history makes it one of the country’s most important historical sites and the ruins were recently cited as the most romantic in Britain. Museum enthusiasts will also love the Rotunda William Smith Museum of Geology in Scarborough. It’s the second oldest purpose-built museum in Britain and home to some fascinating local facts and relics.
Yorkshire’s a great place for foodies too, with more Michelin-Starred restaurants than any other UK county. So don’t expect to have to travel far if you’re thinking of treating yourself to that extra-special evening out. And if you’re staying in Whitby, a visit to Greens of Whitby is a must. Their chef, Rob Green, recently won the prestigious Seafood Chef of the Year award for his seafood splendours. Or for something a little less formal, head for Golden Grid Fish Restaurant in Scarborough. Their fish and chips are legendary and you can enjoy great views over the harbour. After all, what better than devouring a tasty portion of good old fish and chips as the sun sets over the sea? Enjoy.
