Conveniently located on the esplanade this Victorian hotel has unique sea views and benefits from being on a level seafront position. The beach is close by and the shops and holiday attractions of the well-known resort of Ryde are only a short walk away. The hotel is also well-situated for buses, taxis, trains and the hovercraft, so offers the ideal base to travel all around the island as well as over to Portsmouth with its rich maritime history. The seafront position lends itself to some wonderful views from the restaurant and lounges - the perfect place to sit back and relax. A car is ideal for getting around the undulating roads of the Isle of Wight and there is a plethora of things to see and do for all ages. Whether touring historic houses or visiting natural adventure parks, watching the yachting action and festivities of Cowes week, or just relaxing on one of the islands many beaches, you are sure to enjoy the island’s unique charm.

Please note all prices quoted for Bay Royal Esplanade Hotel include free ferry to and from the Isle of Wight. As with many other Ryde hotels, the Royal Esplanade does not have a car park although a public car park is located nearby (parking charges apply).

How to get there


By Car:


From the M27 or A27, take the M275 and the A3 to Portsmouth. Follow signs for Old Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight Car Ferry Terminal. Wightlink's port ticket office is by the terminal. On leaving the ferry at Fishbourne, take the A3054 to Ryde. Follow the road until you reach the seafront. The hotel is on the seafront, opposite the Bus Station. AA Roadwatch 09003 401100.

By Train:


Services operate to Portsmouth Harbour Station which is near the Isle of Wight passenger Ferry Terminal. (Rail enquiries to 08457 484950). A catamaran service operates to Ryde Pier Head, where there is a connecting rail link. The hotel is within walking distance but alternatively you can catch the train, disembark at the next stop and the hotel is located opposite the station.

Local Insight

The Isle of Wight is a diamond shaped Island that is just 23 miles wide and 13 miles high. It is situated at the far South of Great Britain, sandwiched between France and the UK and has many attractions to offer on the island.

  • Shipwreck Centre and Maritime Museum
    Many sad and tragic stories of shipwreck and loss of life are told in the displays, including famous wrecks such as the SS “Mendi”, and the mystery of the missing submarine HMS”Swordfish”,(found by Martin in 1983). Famous local shipwreck stories such as the “Clarendon” and “Sirenia” are also to be found in the displays. Literally thousands of treasures and artefacts are on display in the museum complex.

    The Isle of Wight Zoo is a family-run zoo with a special interest in tigers and lemurs. The zoo was built within the ruins of a Victorian Fort built to guard Sandown's coast, which means we face one of the Isle of Wight's nicest beaches. Once upon a time the zoo owners used to walk tiger cubs on the beach, and we're still famous locally for it. Nowadays we focus on looking after older tigers and giving them a happy retirement.

    Our world famous coloured sand cliffs overlook the Isle of Wight’s most famous landmark – The Needles Rocks and Lighthouse. The Needles Park offers a range of attractions including the spectacular chairlift to the beach, Alum Bay Glass and Sweet Manufactory; the perfect packed day out for all the family. And remember the park is free to enter – rides and other attractions are pay-as-you-go, so you can decide how long the fun goes on!

  • Carisbrooke Castle
    One of the main tourist attractions in the Isle of Wight, Carisbrooke Castle is best known as the place where King Charles I was imprisoned. You can still play bowls on the very green Charles used. For a castle that has lived through more than 800 years of service, including resisting a siege by the French and seeing off the Spanish Armada, it's also wonderfully well preserved.

Royal Esplanade Hotel, Isle of Wight

This was a very friendly hotel to stay in. The rooms were of a good clean standard/. The food was good. The car parking was along the road from the hotel. My wife and I had a really good 4 days break. We will be back this year.

Marvellous

Fantastic Holiday Hotel, Staff couldn’t do enough for you food was good and plenty of it, nice quiet good sized room and very clean, 5 hour free bar every night as it was with National Coaches, special mention to the driver Jim Brilliant will go again.
