Local Insight
The Lancaster and Morecambe Bay area offers an array of differing experiences and sights, below are just a few
Maritime Museum Lancaster’s river, the Lune, is tidal, and until recently was navigable by large trading vessels, giving Lancaster a long maritime history. The Maritime Museum was set up in 1985, in former Customs offices and a warehouse, to chart the maritime history of the area. Using reconstructions, computers, audiovisuals and exhibitions of artefacts, the museum makes a fascinating day out. In addition, the museum now houses an educational area, packed full of information about the ecosystems of Morcambe Bay, the River Lune and Lancaster Canal.
Lancaster Castle There has been a defensive building on the site since Roman times, and since then several buildings have held off attacks from the Picts, Scots and other forces. Today you can see where the Lancashire Witches were tried and convicted, the dungeons and the Drop Room, the “Hanging Corner” where prisoners were executed, and the Crown Court, still used to this day. Guided tours are available, and local theatre groups often use the Castle for performances of Shakespeare plays.
RSPB Leighton Moss North West England's largest reed bed is located in an attractive wooded valley below limestone hills. 5 bird-watching hides overlook shallow meres with fascinating wildlife from bearded tits and bitterns to marsh harriers and red deer. Of the seven hides, four are accessible to disabled visitors. There is also a RSPB Visitor Centre, shop and a tea room. Visit their website
Leighton Hall Set in beautiful parkland against a backdrop of the Lakeland fells, historic Leighton Hall is the home of the world famous furniture making Gillow family. Peaceful
My husband and I visited this hotel and were very pleased with the way we were treated. The staff were very helpful and could not do enough to help us. For the waiting staff, nothing was too much trouble. The hotel was clean and cheerful and although the weather was not too good, the staff and the Shearings staff helped to keep us cheerful. We definitely will be going again next year and would recommend this hotel to anyone who would like a peaceful change .

Perfect Stay
We had a three days stay, came under our own steam. Plenty of car parking. Staff very friendly, especially Macieq the waiter. His service and manor is impeccable. The food was fantastic, we loved every meal. Room a little tired but clean and comfortable. Shower was perfect and very powerful! Would highly recommend this hotel and hope to stay again.
