Eden Arms Hotel is another one of our great character hotels. The building dates back to the 17th-century when it was a coaching inn. Many of our guests use the hotel as a base to explore the city of Durham and the picturesque countryside around. The location, just eight miles from the historic city centre, is the ideal place to relax and unwind for both leisure and business travellers alike. For those who are keen to explore further afield, the city of Newcastle with its regenerated riverfront and great shopping and hospitality is within easy driving distance. The Eden Arms offers comfortable accommodation and also boasts a leisure club featuring a gym, swimming pool, sauna, steam room and spa. It is also a popular venue for conferences and weddings.

Durham and the surrounding areas offer many attractions
Crook Hall and Gardens Medieval hall with Jacobean drawing room, turret and gallery, set in 4 acres of gardens including 2 walled gardens, a silver and white garden, an orchard, courtyard fountain, large moat pool and a maze. The hall is haunted by the White Lady. Ruskin and Wordsworth visited Crook Hall in the 1800s. Visit their website
Durham University and Botanic Gardens Don't miss all that the Botanic Garden has to offer, attractions that appeal to young and old alike. Wander through the Alpine Garden, Winter Garden, Bamboo Grove and our recently developed Woodland Garden and wild flower meadow. With many places to just sit and muse, view the Modern Art or watch the bees in action in their hive. There are wonderful glass houses. Walk through the desert house to see the collection of cacti that thrive in this arid climate. Into the tropical rainforest house, see and feel what it is like to be in such environs, you can even make it rain! It contains a unique collection of plants and just beyond see some of its indigenous inhabitants, bugs, scorpions and tarantulas! There is even a rare breed of Manx Loghtan sheep that can be seen enjoying the parkland in spring. One visit isn't enough, the views change throughout the year with vibrant poppy and cornflower displays in the summer to rich warm colours in the autumn, all this in 18 acres of parkland, just minutes from Durham city centre. Beamish Museum Take a tram ride into the past at Beamish, an open air museum vividly recreating life in the North East in Edwardian, Victorian and Georgian times. Stroll around the shops and houses of the Edwardian Town or go underground at a real drift mine in the Pit Village. Visit the miners’ cottages, pop into the Co-op shops, see the animals at Home Farm and relax in the cosy farmhouse kitchen. Explore Pockerley Old Hall, set in the beautiful Georgian landscape, and ride on a recreation of an early steam train at Pockerley Waggonway. Enjoy the fun of the fair with a ride on the newest attraction, the Steam Gallopers, a beautiful steam carousel. Above all, meet people who lived and worked in the past. Talk to the dentist, school teacher, miners, a pitman’s wife and discover what life was really like. Beamish is no ordinary museum. This is a place where visitors meet history face to face. Throughout the year Beamish hosts an exciting programme of events, from a Georgian Fair to the Great North Steam Fair and much more besides, including a whole season of Christmas! There really is something for everyone. What’s more, there’s no extra charge for these events - entry is included in the admission charge to Beamish. Visit their website

This family friendly attraction is now home to over 70 vehicles from the National Collection. A variety of special events throughout the year. Spring Visit to Durham
Had a comfortable stay here in April, large room and good food. We were in easy driving distance from the park-and-ride facility, which was free to oldies with bus-passes and saved the hassle of taking a car into Durham. I would recommend it to others.
