Local Insight

The Lancaster and Morecambe Bay area offers an array of differing experiences and sights, below are just a few

  • Maritime Museum
Lancaster’s river, the Lune, is tidal, and until recently was navigable by large trading vessels, giving Lancaster a long maritime history. The Maritime Museum was set up in 1985, in former Customs offices and a warehouse, to chart the maritime history of the area. Using reconstructions, computers, audiovisuals and exhibitions of artefacts, the museum makes a fascinating day out. In addition, the museum now houses an educational area, packed full of information about the ecosystems of Morcambe Bay, the River Lune and Lancaster Canal.

  • Lancaster Castle
There has been a defensive building on the site since Roman times, and since then several buildings have held off attacks from the Picts, Scots and other forces. Today you can see where the Lancashire Witches were tried and convicted, the dungeons and the Drop Room, the “Hanging Corner” where prisoners were executed, and the Crown Court, still used to this day. Guided tours are available, and local theatre groups often use the Castle for performances of Shakespeare plays.

  • RSPB Leighton Moss
North West England's largest reed bed is located in an attractive wooded valley below limestone hills. 5 bird-watching hides overlook shallow meres with fascinating wildlife from bearded tits and bitterns to marsh harriers and red deer. Of the seven hides, four are accessible to disabled visitors. There is also a RSPB Visitor Centre, shop and a tea room.

  • Leighton Hall
Set in beautiful parkland against a backdrop of the Lakeland fells, historic Leighton Hall is the home of the world famous furniture making Gillow family. This beautiful historic home has a special blend of complimenting attractions including lively tours and the opportunity to see rare Gillow furniture; peaceful gardens, spectacular events, breathtaking displays from trained Birds of Prey and charming tea rooms with homemade cakes. Gloomy Room

Went for 3 night break at this hotel, staff good, friendly and helpful. Food up to usual Shearings good standards. Only complaint was about the lighting in the room, there were five lights with economy bulbs none of which you could read by.

Satisfied Customer

Travelled with Shearing's, felt that the room was in need of redecoration but was clean and well presented. The food was excellent with multiple choice menus for dinner each night, my wife has particular dietary preferences and if the menu did not suit then the chef was able to accommodate her tastes, the service was second to none with the dining room staff very courteous and friendly. There was entertainment every night and with one exception very enjoyable.

Lovely Staff

We stayed with friends here for a long weekend. This was our 4th stay here but the 1st time we had taken friends. The hotel and staff did not disappoint. Rooms were lovely and clean, staff were excellent as always. The waiters were brilliant - had a banter with my partner as always-which was really funny. All of the staff are excellent-from the receptionists to the bar and restaurant staff. In fact we arrived early and were allowed to check in as our rooms were ready-which was a bonus. Highly recommend.

Perfect Stay

We had a three days stay, came under our own steam. Plenty of car parking. Staff very friendly, especially Macieq the waiter. His service and manor is impeccable. The food was fantastic, we loved every meal. Room a little tired but clean and comfortable. Shower was perfect and very powerful! Would highly recommend this hotel and hope to stay again.
